Counselling for solutions for anxiety and depression

Libby Newton: Registered Psychologist

Libby has worked as a Psychologist since 2006. She provides psychological counselling to adults under a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) framework, assisting them to modify certain behaviour and/or unhelpful thoughts by developing specific psychological strategies or tools. By practicing and using these new psychological skills, clients learn to regain their mental health and get back to living a full and rich life.

With trauma, anxiety and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) as some of her special interests, Libby also utilises Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment in therapy as indicated. The model sees the brain as an Adaptive Information Processor which is able to go back to an unresolved traumatic memory and re-process it in a more adaptive and helpful way using bilateral sensory stimulation and results in reducing the psychological side effects of the experience. EMDR has been empirically proven to treat the symptoms after PTSD and is now being utilised for other psychological conditions including addiction, anger and eating disorders. EMDR has recently been endorsed by World Health Organisation and the American Psychiatric Association as a recommended treatment for PTSD.

Libby's approach to psychological treatment starts with an initial assessment including the client's treatment goals. Following a diagnosis, a treatment plan is developed in consultation with the client and he/she is provided with a psychological education about the condition and assisted to develop a psychological tool kit of strategies to modify unhelpful habits to resolve the condition and become more prepared for potential future triggers. Inter-session behaviour and thought activities (homework) is utilised to assist clients implement more helpful strategies during therapy.
